#142 He Loves the Falls

You know you have discovered something wonderful if you are willing to drive to it time and time again.  Even after this second trip, Hubby and I both agreed we would still take the seven-hour drive back to Niagara in a heartbeat.

Most people grow up knowing what the falls are, but the experience of standing in front of this massive amount of water flowing continuously is unequal to what a simple photograph or description can hold.  Even more astounding is the knowledge that this was not created by man.  It makes me feel so very small, but in the same breath so very important.  If the Creator of the universe could mold water and rock to form something as breathtaking as the Niagara Falls, how much more can he do with me?

Final Stop: Niagara Falls, Canadian Side

We arrived in Canada around dinner time giving us little time to explore the falls during daylight.  After we ate, we wanted to walk around and get closer to the falls so Jonathan could see them with the colorful lights they are lit up with at night.

On our way we ran into this cutie...

Niagara Falls (19)

Alright, I'm calling him a cutie now, but I'll admit I wasn't quite so calm and cool as I stood a foot away from him.

This was, apparently, the night of the crazy spectacular moon.  Naturally, I didn't realize it until we were back in our hotel room.  Jonathan hadn't taken to the idea of standing in the dark against a railing overlooking a deep drop into the water with about a thousand other tourists so we cut our walk short after grabbing some much needed Starbucks.

I tried my best to get a picture of it from out room.  It looked amazing over top of the buildings on the American side of the falls.

But the pictures either came out too blurry...

or caught too much glare from the window.

The fireworks we watched from the same hotel window came out perfectly.

Niagara Falls (26)

Jonathan was still recovering from the trauma of standing near the railing to look at the falls, so he insisted that he was going to stay in his side of the room and not watch the fireworks.

Niagara Falls (28)

Which prompted Hubby to drag him across the room and force him to sit with us as we watched the fireworks over the falls.  Jonathan kept his body turned away from the window, as if looking would cause him to fall out.

Niagara Falls (29)

The next morning we made Jonathan face his fear of the railing.  This time, I think he was more aggravated with the mist blowing in his face than the height.

Niagara Falls (17)

The weather was absolutely perfect.  The last time Hubby and I went it was July and it was hot!  The mist had been a refreshing delight.  We caught some strange fall gust of weather this time and our days were between high 60s and low 70s.

Niagara Falls (7)

I wasn't complaining!

Apparently, the Maid of the Mist is now called, "Hornblower Cruises".  The American side still runs Maid of the Mist ships though.

Niagara Falls (9)

We figured this was the one excursion Jonathan would like best.  It also was my favorite from our last visit.

Because where else can you get a view like this?

For the first couple of minutes on the boat, Jonathan stayed sitting on top one of the lifesaver bins.  Once we got closer to the falls I coaxed him to come stand in front of me.

There are two major negatives about visiting Niagara Falls.

1. Dining is ridiculously expensive.  We paid $40 one day for breakfast...for three people...and before tip!  If you want to save on food, you have to drive at least five minutes away from the falls.

2. There is a lot of walking.  To get to the falls you have two options: walk down an insane incline (which means, walk back up the same incline to go back to your hotel) or take the Falls Incline Railway.  Last time, we didn't use the railway.  We decided we needed the exercise.  This time, since we had Jonathan we planned to buy a day pass and use the railway all day long to spare our legs.  A one way ticket is $2.50, a round trip ticket is $5.00, and an all day pass is $6.00.  We figured we would use the railway at least four times so the round trip ticket would be well worth it.

On our first use of the railway, we were thrilled.  We have saved probably a half hour of time and spared our legs the torture of walking down the strip only to have to walk back to the same spot the railway would drop us at.  Confusing, I know.

The only problem?  We huffed and puffed our way back to the railway after having spent most of the morning looking at the falls, walking down to go on the Hornblower Cruise, only to find that the railway was not working and we would have to walk all the way back from where we started, and up the incline.

I'm not normally one to demand a refund, but you can bet your bottom dollar that I made them refund our round trip ticket purchase.

While we were in Downtown Niagara, Jonathan wouldn't rest until he could play arcade games.  The above game is a great example as to why I do not go on rides at amusement parks.  It shook, rocked me back and forth, made my head bang against the seat, and had me ready to jump off, run out of the arcade, rush to my room and lay on the couch for the next two hours.

I know, I'm a big baby.

After avoiding the window for the first day and a half that we were in Niagara, as we were getting ready to check out was when Jonathan decided to tackle sitting next to the window.  His response?  "I love falls!".

Niagara Falls (15)

It's always hard to end a vacation.  As much as part of me misses home and needs to go back, another part wants to stay away enjoying life somewhere so different from home.

#66 He Likes to Sight-see

Our second day in Niagara Falls was perfection.  What was great about the area was that most of the things to do could be done at any time of the day.

I liked that, a lot.

We weren't forced to wake up early and get a rushed start on the day.  We woke up "late" (8:30), took our time getting ready, had breakfast, and then went about the day.

Me in front of the Horseshoe Falls.

Our first excursion was the Journey Behind the Falls.  It begins at the Niagara Visitor Center (which was a long haul from our hotel that involved an ungodly incline).  From the Visitor Center we were taken into an elevator which takes you down into the depths of the ground.

This part was pretty cool because we were led underground in tunnels that then led out to various views "behind the falls".

We got pretty wet.

It was hot out though, so the mist was very refreshing.

Hubby swore he could jump the railing, get on the rock, jump into the falls, and be totally fine.

I discouraged him greatly.

If he had done it, I probably would have pretended not to know him.

Like I always do during such situations.

We were in the mood for pizza, so we went to My Cousin Vinny's for a quick lunch.

I was more impressed with the floral arrangements outside of the restaurant than the food itself.

This was one of hubby's favorites.  He liked the burnt orange bush in the back.

This was my favorite.

And that's our hotel in the background!

After lunch, we headed back down the treacherous incline to go on the Maid of the Mist.

The Maid of the Mist is a series of boats that are used to take tourists right up into the mist of the falls.

It is thrilling.

A side view of the Horseshoe Falls.

It got so misty as we went into the Horseshoe Falls that hubby looked at me, smiled, and said, "You're eyes are all black!".

What a perfect day to wear mascara!

Later that night after a delicious meal at Tony Roma's we sat for a few minutes people watching as we waited for the falls to light up.

The city view in the night.

Two nights stay was really the perfect amount of time to spend in Niagara, Canada to see and do everything.

Even though, I still left wishing that I could buy a piece of property overlooking the falls so that every day I could stand at my window and sigh at the beauty before me.

#65 He Takes Me on Surprise Vacations

A week ago my hubby informed me that he would be off work the following week.  (If you're doing the math, that means he told me two days before he would be off that he would be off).  He followed this by, "What days do you have nothing to do".

Nothing to do?  Being the perfect housewife that I am, there could not possibly be a single day where I have 'nothing to do'.

However, I could see where his question was going so I told him that I could make my Thursday and Friday clear for him.

After about an hour of brainstorming, we randomly decided to go to Niagara Falls, Canada for two nights.

Minutes after booking our hotel, we realized that to stay in Canada, unlike the days of old, current passports are a must have.

This was no problem for me.  My passport had been renewed when I was married and had my name changed.  My hubby's, however, had expired last year.  Therefore, we had about five days to acquire a current passport for him.

Our trip then changed from starting mid-afternoon on Wednesday, to at the crack of dawn Wednesday.

And the U.S. Passport Agency of Buffalo, NY suddenly became our new best friend.  We arrived in Buffalo around 12:45 pm after about seven hours on the road.  We were an hour and 15 minutes early for hubby's appointment.  Yet, after some wandering about the town, we decided to try our luck at going in early.

Two and half hours later we were headed for Canada.  Buffalo didn't hold too much interest for us.  We found an out of print book store and The Chocolate Martini Bar both which we loved.

Yet, nothing beats NYC for a true city feel.  Anything less always tends to disappoint us.

30 minutes later we were crossing the border into Canada.

And just a few minutes later I was standing at my hotel window sighing at this sight:

The Horseshoe Falls

Yes, this picture was taken from my hotel window.  I was in love.

The American Falls

This one too.

Later, as we moseyed around town, we looked up into the sky and saw this:

That is the Skylon Tower and Jay Cochrane, "The Prince of the Air".  Every day at 7 pm he walks a quarter mile at over 50 stories high from the Skylon Tower to the Fallsview Hilton Hotel.  While walking, he talks to the audience via microphone.

After watching this spectacle for a while, we were forced away to dinner reservations.  I wish I had taken pictures of my meal.  It was that incredible.  Yet, I was so hungry I lost my mind and completely forgot about my camera.

We ate at Remington's of Niagara where the waitresses walk around singing famous pop songs as you eat.  I ordered the Pan Seared Filet of Salmon and was so overcome with delight that I could only hum about how delicious it was.

We asked our server when she would be singing and she informed us that those who sing get payed more.

She opted not to sing.  I have a feeling that many probably do.

The night was glorious and I found myself secretly planning a way to postpone my return to America.

To be continued...
